STMicroelectronics Announces VL53L0, Second Generation Laser Rangefinder Intelligent Sensor Based on Successful FlightSense ™ Technology, Faster, Farther and More Accurate Ranging and Significantly Improved Mobile and Tablet Camera performance opens up new opportunities for smart robotics, user detection, drones, the Internet of Things and wearable devices markets.
The 4.4 x 2.4 x 1mm form factor makes the VL53L0 the world's smallest Time To Flight (TOF) module and the first integrated 940 nm VCSEL light source, SPAD photon detector and advanced microcontroller (managing the entire Ranging function) ranging intelligent sensors. The market's first module with 940 nm emission and advanced infrared filters, the VL53L0 has the industry's best ambient light immunity to minimize the effects of ambient light. In end-product applications, embedded microcontrollers and digital algorithms minimize host processing load and system power consumption.

The VL53L0 is capable of performing all measurements in one frame, typically less than 30ms and less than 2 meters. Such range performance allows the camera system to focus instantaneously in both camera and burst modes, maintaining the same performance even in low-light or low-contrast scenes, whereas for low-light or low-contrast scenes without a ToF-equipped camera system It is a huge challenge. The VL53L0X extends the ToF range length to two meters with an accuracy of ± 3%. Measurement speed faster than the previous generation, ranging less than 30ms; more energy efficient, normal mode of operation consumes only 20mW, standby power consumption is only 5μA. The package size is 2.4mm x 4.4mm x 1mm, the smallest of its kind in the market.
Unlike conventional infrared proximity sensors, the VL53L0X outputs accurate distance measurements up to millimeters. The color and reflected light of the target object do not affect the distance measurement results. The fast-response FlightSense ™ technology, renowned in the industry for its laser-assisted autofocus on large smartphone brands, differentiates between horizontal and vertical movement of the target object. The sensor completes ranging calculation internally and outputs data through the I2C bus interface, thus minimizing the need for a system main controller.
The internal laser emits non-visible light of 940 nm wavelength, does not harm the eyes, eliminates the problem of distracting people from emitting red light with other infrared proximity detection sensors, and enhances the anti-interference performance of external light sources. The digital architecture of the sensor and its automatic compensation make it possible to achieve high performance in scenes with high ambient light levels.
